The Tormod Bakke Education Support Fund was established in memory of Tormod Bakke, a long-standing friend and generous supporter of OneAfricanChild Foundation for Creative Learning. Throughout his life, he invested in the education and wellbeing of vulnerable children through his support of the Foundation. In keeping with his enduring commitment to children’s education, the Fund continues his legacy by providing timely educational support to Nigerian children whose education is at risk because of financial hardship. The Fund seeks to carry forward his vision by ensuring that vulnerable children receive timely educational support when they need it most, helping them remain in school and continue their learning journey. The Fund will launch for the 2026/2027 academic cycle, with support provided to selected beneficiaries beginning in January 2027.
Goal
To contribute to reducing the number of out-of-school children by providing timely, need-based educational support that enables vulnerable children to remain in or return to school.
Objectives
- Provide educational support to children who are at risk of dropping out of school in Nigeria due to financial and social challenges.
- Improve access to quality education for vulnerable children.
- Increase school retention by removing immediate barriers to learning.
- Encourage community participation in identifying children who require educational support.
- Contribute to national efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children.
Target Beneficiaries
The Fund prioritises children aged 8-15 because this period represents a critical stage where financial hardship often leads to permanent school dropout. Therefore the Fund will support children between the ages of 8 and 15 years who:
- Are currently enrolled in school but are at risk of dropping out or facing financial difficulty.
- Come from low-income or vulnerable households.
- Demonstrate genuine educational and financial need.
Beneficiary Selection Process
The Tormod Bakke Education Support Fund will be implemented in collaboration with schools to ensure transparency and that support reaches children with the greatest need.
Applications will be submitted through an online nomination form (linked below). Parents, guardians, teachers, school administrators, and community members may nominate a child by sharing the child’s story, educational challenges, and reasons why they believe the child should receive support.
Each application will undergo a careful review and verification process. Selection will be based on demonstrated need, the urgency of the child’s educational circumstances, the potential impact of the support, and the availability of funds. Priority will be given to children whose education is at immediate risk due to financial challenges.
